Dead Pioneers, a punk rock force hailing from Denver, CO, burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut album in September 2023. This musical endeavor, rooted in the punk aesthetic, fearlessly addresses issues within our society, making a bold statement against the backdrop of a nation entrenched in hypocrisy.

Led by Gregg Deal, a nationally known Indigenous artist of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, Dead Pioneers evolved from a lockdown project initiated during the Covid pandemic. Collaborating with guitarist Josh Rivera and drummer Shane Zweygardt, the band’s original music began taking shape. The addition of Lee Tesche, lead guitarist for Algiers, during an art residency in Florida, solidified the lineup, with later inclusion of guitarist Abe Brennan during the recording sessions at The Blasting Room in Fort Collins, CO.

Dead Pioneers emerged from a fusion of profound passion for music, an unwavering devotion to art, and a fearless DIY disposition, epitomizing the spirit of forging ahead without a predetermined path. Born out of the desire to explore uncharted sonic territories, the band embodies the ethos of just diving in and discovering where the creative journey leads.

Driven by an authentic love for punk music, Dead Pioneers transcends conventional boundaries, embracing a diverse range of influences that contribute to their distinctive sound. Dead Pioneers’ commitment to art also extends beyond the auditory realm. The band, and specifically Deal, uses visual and lyrical elements incorporating artistic expressions into their message. Specifically on  “Bad Indian” as the Pioneers humorously navigate the complexities of Indigenous identity. Gregg Deal, the frontman, uses self-deprecating humor to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about what it means to be a “good” Indian. From cheekbone height to linguistic nuances, Deal highlights the absurdity of expectations placed on Indigenous individuals. The lyrics touch on historical inaccuracies, language critiques, and encounters with others’ misguided perceptions, showcasing Deal’s witty and thought-provoking commentary. Through this tongue-in-cheek approach, “Bad Indian” cleverly dismantles stereotypes while conveying the personal and generational complexities of Indigenous experiences.

In the world of Dead Pioneers, the love of music, devotion to art, and the DIY disposition converge into a vibrant tapestry of sonic and visual meaningful expressions. This unique fusion not only defines their identity but also beckons audiences to join them on a journey where the exploration of uncharted artistic territories knows no bounds.

In conclusion, Dead Pioneers’ debut album transcends music, serving as a potent commentary on societal issues. With a sound that pays homage to punk’s roots while forging a unique perspective, Dead Pioneers demands attention, inspiring change and challenging listeners to question the status quo. Gregg Deal is known as a disruptor – his art, his activism, and his music disrupts the convenience of accepted societal norms and stereotypes. Deal and the Pioneers push their listeners to the uncomfortable but necessary reflection of self AND state.
